This museum-grade WWI German aeroplane dropped propaganda leaflet was dropped from the air over both British, American, and French trenches on the front lines of the German. Brough back by an A.E.F. soldier these WWI aeroplane dropped leaflets are incredibly rare as the fragile condition made most not survive.

What makes this World War I propaganda leaflet so rare is that it is printed on both sides, one in English, and the other side in French. Titled, “The German People Offers Peace” this leaflet discusses talks with President Wilson, the evacuation of Belgium, restricted U-boat warfare and much more. These leaflets were used as a psychological tool to lower morale and their fighting spirit.

These propaganda leaflets of the first world war are one of the rarest artifacts brought back by soldiers, as many of these were destroyed almost immediately after being dropped. Soldiers on either side caught with enemy leaflets faced severe punishment and fines. This leaflet is folded up and still shows dirt from the trenches.

The impact of this propaganda on fighting forces is hard to assess. Leaflets and posters were certainly circulated by all sides, and captured troops were often found to have leaflets in their possession, despite the harsh penalties imposed for doing so. There were also reports of leaflets being exchanged for money.
