EXTREMELY RARE WWII GERMAN PERSONALLY TYPED/SIGNED DEATH LETTER TO KIA WIDOW.
In our many years collecting and preserving artifacts we have never come across a theater typed letter by a Captain of the German Army to a widow of a German soldier. This letter is an honor, condolence, and informative of death in combat.
Please note we do a slight extra charge to our WWII German letters with a full letter translation. This charge is included in the price of the artifact for the time it takes to translate the German text.
This extremely rare World War II German document is a death notice to a German woman whose husband (Wilhelm Dieckmann) was KIA (killed in action) on January 29th, 1942. According to field post # 44149, her husband was with “Hunter Command #3” of the German Army. On January 20, 1942, the command was ordered by the 83rd Infantry Division to advance through Surash on Welish. When the command left its positions too soon on 31 January 1942, Infantry Regiment 257 suffered heavy casualties as it pushed through on Welish.
The letter reads as follows:
Transcript
Captain Schuster, feldpost # 44149
O.U.7 March 1942
Dear Ms. Dieckmann!
I have the heavy duty of honor to inform you that your husband, our dear, brave comrade, the private Wilhelm Dieckmann, has been missing since the fighting for Welish on January 29, 1942. The battalion had heavy rear battles in which your husband was separated from the troop. Regarding the fighting style of the enemy, it must unfortunately be assumed that he found the heroic death for our german fatherland. I express my condolences to the great suffering that has affected you, also on behalf of all of his comrades, and greet you with sincere sympathy.
Signed Schumacher,
captain and battalion commander.
