'Lt. Glenn Williams' Sicily Granite Trench Art
Size: 6.5 x 5.25 inches
This amazing piece of craved art was a bring back piece of trench art of the WWII Italian Campaign by Lt. Glenn Williams. The black toned ashtray appears to be carved out of marble or granite like material. Material such as these were often found in building seized by U.S. soldier’s during the Italian Campaign of WWII. Pieces such as this were often laying discarded from the walls or floors due to the comb in the area and Allied bombings of the enemy occupied cities. What makes the ashtray special is the ashtray has the names of the places that he had been as well as a carved picture located on the left side of the piece. Some of the cities carved into the ashtray are infamous battles such as Trapani, Palermo, Agrigento, Gela, Messina, and Etna. The shape of the ashtray also depicts the shape and contour of the island of Sicily.
