The Ethnogeographic Board and the staff of the Smithsonian created a 187 page pocket sized, waterproof, booklet for soldiers and airman to carry with them through the war. The booklet detailed survival information for servicemen stranded in the Pacific. The information, compiled by Smithsonian experts, included tips on how to start fires, how to find water, navigation information, how to identify edible and dangerous plants, and much more. The board distributed over 1 million booklets by the end of the war.
