This incredible WWII bombing Italy air raid photograph comes from the bring back wartime collection of Sgt. Lewis Newton of the 15th Air Force, 449th Bombardment Group, 719th Bombardment Squadron. Sgt. Newtown flew on the bomber named “Darling Vi” and along with the 449th operated from Grottaglie from January 1944 until the end of the war in Europe in May 1945. From Grottaglie, the 449th flew a total of 254 combat missions against targets in central and eastern Europe.

Air raid photographs such as this were taken on nearly every mission. These photographs provided the 15th Air Forces high-ranking officers and intelligence officials with vital intelligence information that they used to direct future bombing missions and strategical advantages to out-guess the enemy. Thousands of pilots and aircrew throughout the war risked their lives to take photographs such as this one right here.
