Although the origin of this photograph cannot be traced, it demonstrates an amazing view of what trench warfare look like during World War I. This photograph was taken from a biplane flying over the trenches as soldiers went over the top into ‘no mans land’ against the enemy. As planes for military use started to become more prevailing throughout the course of the war, photographs such as these were taken to relay information and provide an aerial view of combat never before seen in warfare.
The Battle of Château-Thierry was fought on 31 May 1918 and was one of the first actions of the American Expeditionary Forces under General John J. "Black Jack" Pershing. It was a battle in World War I as part of the Second Battle of the Marne, initially prompted by a German Spring Offensive.
