This authentic NASA Space Shuttle Discovery display features a genuine piece of the Space Shuttle Discovery, originally used during its historic STS-82 mission and its nearly 4 million miles in orbit around Earth.

The STS-82 mission, part of NASA's Space Shuttle program, was the second mission to service the Hubble Space Telescope. Launched on February 11, 1997, aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery, the mission lasted 9 days, 23 hours, and 37 minutes, covering nearly 4 million miles in orbit. The crew of seven astronauts conducted five spacewalks totaling 33 hours, 11 minutes, a record number at the time, to upgrade and repair Hubble’s instruments. Major accomplishments included installing the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) and the Near Infrared Camera and Multi-Object Spectrometer (NICMOS), which significantly enhanced Hubble's observational capabilities.

The upgrades enabled Hubble to capture more detailed images and contributed to breakthroughs in astrophysics, including the study of black holes, galaxies, and the early universe. STS-82 marked a high point in shuttle-era servicing missions, showcasing NASA's expertise in conducting complex repairs and upgrades in space.
