Dated: 1984
This authentic NASA Space Shuttle Challenger display features a genuine piece of the shuttle’s door seal, originally used during its historic STS-41B mission.
The STS-41B mission, launched on February 3, 1984, was a significant NASA Space Shuttle mission that achieved several milestones. Using the Space Shuttle Challenger, this mission marked the first time astronauts conducted an untethered spacewalk. Bruce McCandless II and Robert L. Stewart made history by using the Manned Maneuvering Unit (MMU), a jet-powered backpack, to move freely in space without a tether—a major achievement in extravehicular activity (EVA) capabilities.
The mission also deployed two communication satellites, Westar VI and Palapa B2, although both failed to reach their intended orbits. The crew spent 7 days, 23 hours, and 15 minutes in space, completing 127 orbits of Earth. The STS-41B mission paved the way for advanced space operations, particularly in satellite repair and retrieval, and showcased the potential for astronauts to perform more independent spacewalks.
Our meticulous craftsmanship transforms this storied piece of NASA history into a sophisticated display perfect for any display case, desk, or collector space! This display is perfect for anyone passionate about NASA, astronauts, or space exploration history!
