This authentic NASA Space Shuttle Discovery display features a genuine piece of the Space Shuttle Discovery, originally used during its historic STS-56 mission which marked NASA's first Hispanic woman in space (Michael Foale).
The STS-56 mission, also known as the Space Shuttle Discovery's 16th flight, launched on April 8, 1993, and lasted for 9 days, 6 hours, 8 minutes, and 24 seconds. The mission's primary goal was to study the Earth's atmosphere and solar activity, contributing to our understanding of climate, weather, and environmental changes.
One of the key achievements of STS-56 was the deployment of the Atmospheric Laboratory for Applications and Science-2 (ATLAS-2), which collected data on the sun's energy output and how it affects Earth's atmosphere, crucial for climate studies. The crew also conducted a series of scientific experiments and deployed the SPARTAN-201 free-flying satellite, which gathered data on solar wind and the sun's corona before being retrieved and brought back to Earth.
STS-56 marked a significant contribution to solar-terrestrial research and reinforced NASA's commitment to studying Earth's environment from space. The crew included five astronauts: Commander Kenneth Cameron, Pilot Stephen Oswald, and Mission Specialists Ellen Ochoa, Charles Gemar, and Michael Foale. Ochoa's participation on this mission also highlighted her role as the first Hispanic woman in space, furthering the historical significance of STS-56.
