#1. Historical Significance:
Desmond Doss, a U.S. Army medic and devout Seventh-day Adventist, became a symbol of heroism and conviction during the harrowing Battle of Okinawa in the Pacific Theater of World War II. Serving with the 77th Infantry Division, Doss was a conscientious objector who refused to carry due to his religious beliefs, yet he insisted on serving his country in a meaningful way—as a medic. The Battle of Okinawa, which began in April 1945, was one of the bloodiest and most strategically significant battles of the Pacific campaign. The Japanese were deeply entrenched on the island, particularly atop the Maeda Escarpment—a jagged, 400-foot limestone cliff the American troops nicknamed “Hacksaw Ridge.” During the intense fighting, U.S. forces faced relentless Japanese barrages, troop fire, and banzai charges. Amid the chaos, Doss performed extraordinary acts of bravery. On May 5, 1945, after a brutal Japanese counterattack drove U.S. troops off the ridge, Doss remained behind alone under heavy fire. Over the course of several hours, he rescued approximately 75 wounded soldiers by lowering them one by one down the cliff face using a rope and a makeshift sling, all while praying, “Lord, please help me get one more.” For his unwavering courage and selflessness, Desmond Doss became the first conscientious objector in American history to receive the Medal of Honor. His actions not only saved lives but also demonstrated that heroism is not defined by violence, but by the willingness to risk one’s life for others.
