Titled: "Saipan, June 1944 U.S.M.C. Photo”
This original World War II era photograph comes from a collection of U.S.M.C. photographs taken during some of the most infamous battles and campaigns in the Pacific Theater. The photographic soldiers and officers assigned to take photos such as this were attached to Marine divisions and were designated as ‘Field Photographic Units’. The use of field photographic units had never been implemented in war on this scale and as a result the military and men assigned to this division had to create it from scratch, established policies for photography, and led their men into combat. These units produced films and photos of training, combat action pictures, and later, terrain studies and photographs for intelligence purposes.
