This is an incredible and original WWII German soldier’s personal photograph. This photograph was the bringback of WWII U.S. veteran who served in the European Theater during WWII. It is unclear where, how, or when during the war this veteran acquired this photograph.

Over the course of World War II in the European Theater soldiers were always on the lookout for bring back souvenirs on the battlefield and in the towns the liberated. Some of these souvenirs would even be items taken directly off of the fallen German soldiers in the very place they fell.

Popular bring back items were always German lugers, helmets, caps, and even personal photographs. What made photographs so easy to “bring back” or take when looking for war trophies was they were flat, lightweight, and easy to carry…something that a soldier found useful and handy while still on an active battlefield in the ETO. These photos would be stuffed into their pockets, bags, and sometimes even passed by U.S. ARMY or NAVAL censors in airmail back to the United States.

It is believed that this photograph was most likely a bringback as the U.S. Army pushed farther into Germany during the final months of WWII.

This would make an amazing edition to any WWII collection!
