Soldiers at the time took great pride in their extravagant uniforms and would often shine their boots and helmets themselves. The Christmas truce of WWI was a series of widespread but unofficial ceasefires along the Western Front around Christmas 1914. This German tin was dug in the fields of Saint-Yves where the German soldier were said to have placed candles on their trenches as well as began singing Christmas carols. The British soon responded by singing carols of their own. The two sides continued the signing by shouting Christmas greetings to each other until they met in the middle of no mans land.
