The Gewehr 98 was one of the most popular guns used by the Germans during WWI. The German bolt action Mauser rifle fired cartridges from a 5 round internal clip-loaded magazine using the five round stripper clip. When loading the gun, the soldier would line the groove of the clip into the open top receiver and push down to insert the bullets. At the outbreak of WWI German had 2.3 million Gewehr 98 rifles, and produced another 7,000,000 during the war. This pouch was worn on the belts of German soldiers fighting in the trenches as a way to hold excess ammunition for their rifle.
