Poison gas was one the most feared of all weapons during the course of WWI. The German 'Lederschutzmaske' gas mask is one of the most recognizable images of WWI and trench warfare. The mask is made from a single piece of chrome-tanned sheepskin dipped in an oil sealant solution. The removable filer at the bottom aloud for quick replacement cartridges to be swapped out if need during battle. These filters protected soldiers in the trenches of the poisonous gas shells dropped by enemy forces. Soldiers lived in constant fear of these attacks and constantly carried gas masks with them in the trenches and next to them when they slept. It is estimated that by the end of the war there were 1,250,000 gas casualties.
